trash for cash
Who could have thought it was possible to make money selling trash… well, Ashley certainly didn’t. She’d rather sell pizzas or shakes and sherbets at a local branch but, you know, shit happens. How the hell had she ended up working in the dumpster?
Well, Ashley may have not been the sharpest knife in the school but she certainly was not the kind of posh and selfish girl who’d never wash the dishes or avoid helping her neighbors with their shopping bags. At least, she knew she would be able to pull off this job.
Ashley saw herself as a nice country girl but gossip in her village was that she was an unpolished, tomboyish girl who had a crush on her Polish friend Sharon —as if loving anybody was a blemish on one’s soul. Although she didn’t want to pay attention to these harmful comments, they surely tarnished her reputation.
Why was this happening to her? Was it because her family was Jewish? She didn’t want to think so and, above all, she wished they shut their mouths up. But she lived in such a small village, gossip was the only entertainment at hand. And, apparently, she was the center of it all.
So, as we said, Ashley was not the most distinguished girl in her town, and her looks didn’t help her at all. She always had an unfinished vibe, no matter what she wore. The other girls at school always had perfectly brushed hair and seemed so polished and girlish. Always ready to blush and smile at any comment the boys threw at them.
But, unlike them, Ashley always spoke up and never shied away from confrontation. Why would she? Boys didn’t.
There she was once again, about to eat her kosher food, wishing it was sushi instead. But raw fish and shrimps were not kosher enough for her mother. Another dream crushed —she thought, while finishing her food.
At least she had Sharon’s friendship. If only she could talk her into establishing their own business and getting ownership of a small workshop, they could finally live their own lives. How would she make it happen? —she wondered while heading towards the dumpster for the afternoon shift.
