En esta lección sobre vocabulario básico vamos a ver las profesiones en inglés. Puedes hacer los ejercicios al final de la lección para recordar mejor todo lo aprendido.

Vamos a ver primero unas reglas básicas sobre cómo se forman las profesiones en inglés.

La inmensa mayoría de las profesiones en inglés se hacen añadiendo —er al verbo. Sencillamente porque la terminación —er en inglés expresa «que lo hace».

Salvo la familia y algún otro, los sustantivos en inglés no tienen género y las profesiones no son una excepción. Es decir, las profesiones en inglés no tienen masculino y femenino. I am a teacher lo puede decir tanto un hombre como una mujer sin cambiar nada porque teacher es profesor pero también profesora.

Además, en las profesiones que sí tienen género, se intentan evitar y se usa otra palabra que incluya a todo el mundo.

Recuerda que las profesiones en inglés llevan delante el artículo indeterminado a / an cuando las usamos en singular.

Sometimes, people get sick and they need to go the hospital to get well. Doctors and nurses help us get better and be healthy again. If we are very sick, we need the help of a surgeon.

When you have a toothache you go to the dentist, which can be scary with all those tools in your mouth.

Vets help our pets and other animals get well. When your dog or cat is sick, a vet becomes your best friend.

When you study in a school, high school or university you are a student and you learn from your teachers, who try to teach you everything they know.

Scientists work in a lab, researching new medicines, how our climate works and many other useful things that make our lives better.

Many people make a living by driving. Some drivers work with a taxi or a bus on the road and we call them taxi drivers and bus drivers.

Some other drivers fly planes because they are pilots. If they work on a ship, we call them sailors. Some people have very special jobs and they work in space. We call them astronauts.

There are many jobs in which people try to make the world safer. Some of them can be dangerous like firefighters or soldiers.

Detectives and police officers try to catch criminals. Lawyers and judges work in a court room and decide if a criminal must go to prison.

When you need a haircut and you want to look beautiful you need a hairdresser. If you have a beard, you can go to a barber.

To buy a new dress or suit you need a tailor. You can also go to a store, where a shop assistant will help you get the best clothes for you.

Many people like working outdoors like farmers and gardeners. Farmers grow food like rice, apples or carrots. Gardeners keep plants happy and create beautiful gardens.

Some people’s work consist on talking, among other tasks. Journalists work on television or newspapers, informing people about current events.

Politicians rule the country and make laws. Priests and nuns talk about religion and guide people who need spiritual help.

When you go to a restaurant or a coffee shop, you can find many different types of jobs. Chefs and cooks prepare the food and waiters and waitresses bring it to you. They work very hard so we can have a good time.

Bakers make delicious bread and cakes that we all love. Butchers sell meat like chicken, beef and pork.

There are many kinds of artists. Some of them are more popular in today’s world like singers and actors or actresses. Others, like writers or painters are less famous but they all make our world more beautiful.

Nowadays, many people work in an office. People who work in an office are called office workers. The person who manages the office and takes the decisions is called the manager.

Some people work selling products to other people or companies. They are known as salesmen or saleswomen.

Some people work building and repairing things. People who design buildings are called architects and people who design machines are called engineers.

When things like cars or televisions are broken, you call a mechanic to have them fixed.
