El vocabulario sobre los hobbies o aficiones en inglés no tiene mucha dificultad porque, en muchas ocasiones, en español utilizamos la misma palabra, que les hemos cogido prestada.

En general, este tipo de actividades en inglés hacen el sustantivo añadiendo —ing al verbo.

Incluso hay mucha gente, no solo hipsters, que pasa de las palabras propias del español y utilizan directamente las del inglés, como por ejemplo, ir de camping en lugar de ir de acampada. Es la misma actividad pero más modernita y guay 😉

Some people enjoy outdoor activities but others prefer indoor ones. This may also depend on the time of the year or where you live.

Indoor activities are great for winter days or those countries where it is always cold outside. 

Many indoor activities are board games like chess, one of the most challenging strategy games ever. Playing cards is also very popular and a Christmas tradition in countries like Spain. Crosswords are pretty popular too and they are a good option when you don’t have any friends to play with.

Trivia and quizzes are a lot of fun and you can also learn some new stuff. Quizzes are very popular in countries like the UK, especially in bars.

Bars and other similar places where people meet after work usually offer several games or activities for people to enjoy and have fun. Darts and pool are the most traditional ones but foosball is gaining popularity in countries like the USA.

Some indoor activities also involve some physical exercise. We usually practice them inside because they require some type of equipment or because of the weather.

Cooking is very trendy nowadays and more and more people want to learn how to cook delicious food for their family and friends.

Other indoor activities can be less physically tiring and people usually choose them because they are relaxing like knitting, pottery making and painting. These hobbies are also creative and in addition to having fun you can learn new useful skills.

Reading is one of the most popular activities. Whether you like reading the newspaper in the morning, some blog in the middle of the day or a novel at night, reading is always exciting and educational. It’s a win-win!

Outdoor activities are a different kind of fun. They usually involve some type of physical exercise and they are considered healthier because of that.

We enjoy many hobbies and activities in the sea like sailing or surfing, which is often consider a cool sport. Some other people prefer more relaxing activities by the sea, like sunbathing. Don’t forget to apply sun block!

Traveling and eating out are among the most popular leisure activities. They work well together as a very interesting part of traveling can be discovering new food. FYI, the spelling is «travelling» in British English but «traveling» in American English.

Camping is a type of traveling in which you sleep in a tent in the woods or near a lake. It’s a great experience for children and it can also be cheaper than hotels. While camping, you can also do many other activities like hiking through beautiful landscapes or national parks.

Hunting can also be done in the forest while fishing happens in lakes, rivers or even the sea. Some people see hunting and fishing as cruel hobbies.

People who live in cold climates can go ice-skating during the winter. Ice-skating is also very popular during Christmas and has become a tradition in many cities.

Jogging is a very popular activity, especially among people who want to stay healthy and practice some sport every day. It’s very cheap and entertaining.
