The basic structure of a house includes a roof over your head and walls around you. It also needs deep foundations into the ground to be stable and last for a long time.

On the inside, most houses are divided into rooms, accessible through doors and organized with corridors. Most rooms also have windows to let fresh air and sunlight in. Inside a room, if you look up you will find a ceiling and if you look down, you can find the floor.

Talking about floors, the most common types are made of wood or tiles, especially in the kitchen and the bathroom.

kitchen

The kitchen is a very special place in every house. It is where food is prepared and one of the places where the family meets, especially if something good is being cooked.

Kitchens usually have a lot of cabinets because we need storage space for our food supplies and kitchenware like dishes, cutlery and glasses. When kitchenware is dirty after use, you can wash it up in the sink or a dishwasher. Remember to do it every time, don’t let your parent / roommate put up with your dirty dishes.

To prepare food you need counter space, and you will need a lot if you want to prepare more good meals. Small house appliances usually go on the countertop too because we need them to be easily accessible.

Small house appliances are often used to make breakfast like coffee machines, kettles and toasters. You may also have a blender to prepare those delicious smoothies that help you have a healthy lifestyle and even a scale if you are watching what you eat. Scales are also very handy if you are baking because baking needs precise measurements.

Kitchens also have large household appliances like the fridge, where you store food that otherwise will go bad quickly.

Ovens are essential for cooking more elaborated plates while microwave ovens let you cut corners and save time when you need to heat up something really fast.

When you cook, most of the times you do it using a cooker, whether it is a gas cooker or an electric one. Don’t forget to turn on the hood or you’ll make your kitchen smelly and filled with smoke.

People with larger houses in the suburbs usually have a separate room for doing laundry, where they place the washing machine and the dryer but people living in the city may have those appliances in the kitchen since living space is tighter in the city.

bathroom

A toothbrush and some toothpaste is all you need to keep your teeth clean, although some people like using dental floss too.

It’s very important to wash your hands frequently to have them clean and sanitized. You just need some water and soap, and also a towel to dry them afterwards. Likewise, you must wash your hand after using the toilet and cleaning your butt with toilet paper.

Some people have a shower daily and some don’t but anyway, you need some shower gel and shampoo to have your body super clean. You may use a sponge to help spread the gel or your hands, as you prefer. After your shower, you also need to dry up your skin with a towel and you may want to dry your hair with a blow drier and use a comb or a brush to make your hair look perfect.

Like kitchens, bathrooms also have cabinets where you can store your toiletries such as soaps and creams and all the other stuff we use to stay clean and beautiful.

We all use a mirror to check if we look as we want to, which is usually placed above the sink. Sinks always come with a tap, which makes water flow into the sink.

Other necessary elements of a bathroom are the toilet —where we do number one and two— and a shower or a tub, where we can have a shower or a bath. Some people are very lucky and they even have a hot tub, where they can relax and enjoy a hot bath with bubbles.

bedroom

Bedrooms are the most private place in the house and we usually call it my room. It is called bedroom because you literally have your bed in it, where is a single bed or a double one.

The basics of a bed are a mattress, which is essential for a good night sleep and some pillows. You also need some sheets and a blanket or duvet. It depends on your liking and also on the time of the year because in winter a blanket is in order. Some people like having some bed cushions as well, mainly for decoration.

Since it is your room, you can put in it whatever you feel like but most people have a wardrobe (UK) or a closet (USA) to keep their clothes organized. You may also have some bookshelves and even a desk.

living room

What we do in a living room is self explanatory: we live in it. Families spend a lot of time in the living room doing things like watching television, playing board games or just hanging out with your family. That’s why sometimes people say family room instead of living room.

A sofa (UK) or couch (USA) is the central piece of every living room and it’s a good idea to invest a little extra in it because you’ll be using it a lot. You can also have some armchairs if your family is large enough or if you like having people over.

Somo people have a different room for having lunch or dinner, called dining room, and some others have their meals in the living room. Anyway, you will need some chairs and a table, unless you live in Japan.

Most people also have a TV in their living rooms, although some people decide that they do not want to have another screen to look at besides their phones, tablets and laptops.

Other pieces of furniture you can place in a living room, or any other room, are a carpet to keep your feet warm, lamps to light the room and bookcases to keep your books and decor tidy. You can also add some pictures to dress up your walls, whether with paintings or photographs of your family members or your trips.
